Heartworm Preventive
Heartworm disease affects dogs in all fifty states. Prevalence in Texas is high due to our abundance of mosquitoes. Heartworm disease is contracted when a mosquito bites an infected dog and ingests heartworm larvae (baby heartworms). The mosquito then bites your dog injecting these larvae into the bloodstream. Within six months these larvae have developed into adults and now live in the heart and lungs. Heartworms can grow to be nine inches long. Imagine a heart full of spaghetti. As the adults continue to grow and accumulate, the heart begins to stretch diminishing its ability to pump blood. You may notice your dog tiring easily after exercise or coughing. Unfortunately, one of the first signs we notice with heartworm disease is death. An adult heartworm blocks the flow of blood and your dog essentially has a massive heart attack. Approximately 85% of all dogs in north Texas not on preventive will develop heartworm disease. The cost of preventive is minor compared to the alternative.

Occult Heartworm Test

This test is required before your pet can be started on heartworm preventive. After your pet has been started on preventive a test will be required annually. Starting a pet on preventive without assuring they are negative for heartworms could be fatal.

Revolution
Revolution is a topical flea control and heartworm preventative. Revolution for cats also helps control ear mites. This product is applied once a month between the shoulder blades.

Flea and Tick Control
Our clinic offers several flea and tick products that are all very effective; however, in a situation where an abundance of fleas already exist the area needs to either be fogged and refogged in two weeks or treated by a professional. The clinic recommends a professional since most will guarantee their work. If a dog is in a tick infested area or travels to an area with ticks the clinic recommends a preventative collar.
Frontline Plus Top Spot
Frontline Plus kills fleas and ticks as well as prohibiting the development of the egg and larval form of fleas. Frontline is safe to use as well as being effective. The product is water proof for pets that swim or are bathed frequently. Be sure not to apply Frontline two days before or two days after a bath. This product is applied topically between the shoulder blades on a monthly basis.
